Rens Krikhaar
In his drawings and paintings Rens Krikhaar (1982) finds inspiration in his own experiences, but also refers to and researches themes from history and art history.
An enigmatic, dark painting of a man who appears to be strangling a sheep was his graduation piece. The man is seen from the back so we can only guess whether the animal is actually being slaughtered or just shorn. The tension this evokes, without subsequently explaining all, is characteristic for Rens Krikhaar's work. He has a sharp eye for little deviations and peculiarities in everyday images. In the drawing Violation of trust a man, a woman and two children are looking out from a cave onto a mountain landscape. In itself the image is innocent and photogenic but it gets a dark connotation once you notice the swastikas on the fence in front of the cave. The girl is averting her eyes from the landscape and indecisively stares into the cave.
